Finding a topic in creative writing often starts with exploring your interests, personal experiences, or observations about the world around you. You can begin by jotting down ideas, asking “what if” questions, or drawing inspiration from books, movies, and conversations. Sometimes, allowing your imagination to wander can spark unique and original topics to develop further.

Once you’ve settled on a topic, it’s time to “flesh it out.” There’s a technique called freewriting in which you simply jot down anything that comes to mind about your topic - just words and phrases, and in no particular order. That comes later. If you’re writing about a shared experience, talk to the person who was with you. Sometimes - no, often - another point of view or another set of eyes can bring back memories that perhaps you’ve lost.

This stage ensures that your essay or story communicates its ideas effectively and is compelling. You’ll read it, and read it again, to make sure that the story stays true to your original vision.
